2025 Mission Report

Standing for what’s right

Blue Shield of California is one of the state’s largest health plans and the only major plan to cap net income at 2% of revenue, returning the rest to customers and communities. As a taxpaying nonprofit with no shareholders, we’re driven by purpose. Over the past three years, we contributed $60 million to Blue Shield of California Foundation to support a healthier state and end domestic violence.

Driving environmental action

Pollution and escalating environmental events drive an estimated $820 billion in U.S. healthcare costs annually, with disproportionate impacts on vulnerable communities. From heat waves and bad air days, to disasters like floods or the Southern California wildfires, these risks affect health and affordability. Beyond emergency response, we are proactively reducing greenhouse gas emissions through our commitment to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). We also invested in environmental nonprofits, youth eco-anxiety resources, greener care solutions like Virtual Blue, environmental health research, and thousands of volunteer hours through our Blue Goes Green employee group.
