OAKLAND, Calif. (July 20, 2020) – With a long-standing history of serving those who serve California, Blue Shield of California is expanding its innovative Trio Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) plan to CalPERS members living in San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara* and Ventura counties starting in January 1, 2021. This extends Blue Shield’s current Trio offering to CalPERS members in Los Angeles, Sacramento, El Dorado, Nevada, Placer and Yolo counties.
With Trio HMO, the lowest cost HMO plan offered to State workers in both Northern and Southern California, CalPERS members enjoy more affordable premiums plus valuable services such as 24/7 virtual consults, on-demand doctor visits, and pharmacy delivery with no additional cost. Meal delivery programs and non-emergency transport services are also offered for qualified members recovering from serious illness.
CalPERS members continue to be offered Access+, which is Blue Shield’s broad network HMO plan offering coverage in 27 counties. For 2021, the Access+ rate increase is just 3.2%, which is lower than the CalPERS State average premium HMO increase of 4.4%.
“Blue Shield of California is proud to provide high-quality affordable health care services to CalPERS and we look forward to welcoming new members in more counties in 2021,” said Mohammad Suleiman, Area Vice President, CalPERS Sector, Blue Shield of California.
CalPERS is the largest public employer purchaser of health benefits in California and the second largest employer purchaser in the nation after the federal government. CalPERS membership represents Blue Shield’s largest commercial HMO client with its Access+ HMO and Trio HMO plans. The tax paying nonprofit health plan has been providing health plan benefits and access to quality care to CalPERS employees and their families for over two decades.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Blue Shield has provided additional support to CalPERS members such as meal delivery service by LifeSpring at no additional cost through end of 2020 for members who test positive for COVID-19 and 24/7 virtual consults with board-certified physicians and behavioral specialists via Teladoc.
