Each week, music fills the room at the L.A. Care Health Plan and Blue Shield of California Promise Health Plan Community Resource Center in Lynwood as older adults and people with disabilities gather for a Zumba Gold class. Some participants remain seated, but that doesn’t stop them from waving their hands, stomping their feet, and moving to the beat.
For 72-year-old María Elena Guerrero, the class has become a source of energy, connection, and purpose. A Los Angeles resident and breast cancer survivor currently in remission, Guerrero understands the importance of staying active. But after retiring in 2020 following three decades working in a metal factory, she found the transition difficult.
"I spent hours sitting, watching television and the news or reading a book, and I started to notice how my legs were retaining fluid," Guerrero said. "I was becoming less active and looking for something to motivate me."
A friend recommended the free fitness classes at the Community Resource Center in Lynwood. Today, Guerrero rarely misses the Fitness for Seniors and People with Disabilities Zumba Gold class. Designed for older adults and people of all abilities, the class combines low-impact movements with upbeat music in a supportive environment. Participants exercise at their own pace, seated or using a chair for comfort and stability, while working on strength, balance, and flexibility.

"I really like movement. For me, it's wonderful, and I come out feeling very motivated," Guerrero said. "I've learned to keep my balance and move without feeling like I'm going to fall or get hurt. Exercise has made me more flexible. I feel happier and full of energy."
The benefits go beyond physical activity. Participants also have a place to build friendships, share experiences, and connect with others.
"When people first join us, they’re often looking for ways to stay active and meet others," said class instructor Brenda Terriquez. "As the days go by, they start seeing results. They tell me, 'I feel better. I don't wake up as tired. I can sleep better.' Exercise supports overall well-being."
Terriquez also emphasizes the importance of maintaining strength as people age. "It's important for older adults to exercise," she said. "Without it, sarcopenia, or muscle loss, can make everyday tasks more difficult."
For Guerrero, what began as a search for motivation has become an important part of her weekly routine. "This stage of life should be lived to the fullest," she said.
Her experience shows how movement can offer more than exercise. It can create community, build confidence, and bring a little joy to the week.
