Blue Shield of California Promise and L.A. Care health plans jointly operate 14 Community Resource Centers throughout Los Angeles County, offering free programs that support the health and well-being of local residents in welcoming, familiar spaces.

In June, the plans invited Rolling with Dads, a Los Angeles-based nonprofit focused on uplifting and supporting fathers, to launch a new digital literacy and workforce development series at the Community Resource Center in South L.A., available to everyone. The Digital Skills & Technology Skills program was designed in direct response to community input about the skills visitors said they need most.
“Across South L.A., many people — especially fathers, older adults, and those navigating career changes — are looking for ways to grow but don’t always have access to the tools or guidance,” said Arturo Piña, site manager at the Center. “We’re proud to work with Rolling with Dads to bring these resources into a space where people already feel comfortable learning and connecting.”
The free classes are open to anyone in the community and begin with a focus on digital and technology skills, helping participants build confidence and practical expertise using everyday tools — no prior experience needed.
Facilitators guide participants through hands-on learning using their own devices in a supportive, judgment-free environment. Organizers hope the series will be especially helpful for those entering or returning to the workforce, by providing the tools to navigate today’s job market. The first two sessions have already drawn strong interest, with approximately a dozen participants each.
Future sessions will expand to include topics such as resume writing, development of LinkedIn profiles, interview preparation, job searching, and financial readiness. Participants can drop into sessions that interest them or attend regularly to continue building skills over time.
“Rolling with Dads was founded to support fathers through community, education, and connection, with a focus on mental health, parenting, and emotional well-being,” said Hezekiah Johnson, founder and executive director of the organization. “Expanding into digital literacy and workforce development allows us to reach even more people. When individuals have access to tools and opportunities, it strengthens families and the community.”
By bringing these resources directly into the neighborhood, Blue Shield Promise and L.A. Care are helping close access gaps and making sure more people have what they need to succeed.
Digital Literacy classes are currently offered twice monthly and are expected to continue through the end of the year.
