Here's how SF City and County Employees Can Get Two Weeks of Sun Basket Meals

Blue Shield and Sun Basket team up with the city and county of San Francisco to test a program designed to help employees break the barriers associated with healthy eating

City and County of San Francisco employees will have a chance to try two weeks of delicious recipes with organic produce and clean ingredients, conveniently delivered to their homes as part of their Trio HMO health plan. The innovative pilot is a collaboration between Blue Shield and Sun Basket, a leading San Francisco-based meal kit delivery service.

“This pilot is a first step in helping us understand how we can help members overcome some of the obstacles they face when trying to build healthy eating habits, such as not having time to shop for and prepare healthy food,” said Bryce Williams, vice president, lifestyle medicine, Blue Shield. “We will continue to look for unique collaborations that will transform how we serve our members.”

A healthy diet is an important part of Blue Shield’s lifestyle medicine approach to wellness. Research shows that lifestyle medicine is often the safest, least invasive and most cost-effective way to address many chronic conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, stroke, some cancers, and osteoporosis.

“We care about the health of our employees and want to offer them access to health plans and services that empower them to improve their well-being beyond the doctor’s office,” said Mitchell Griggs, City and County of San Francisco. “We are excited to work with Blue Shield and Sun Basket on this pilot because it gives employees inspiration to integrate healthier eating habits into their lives in the long-term.”

To participate in the pilot, employees must complete a preventive care visit within the first 90-days of 2019. When they try Sun Basket, employees can select a meal plan to fit their health and wellness needs, or mix and match from the entire weekly menu of 18 recipes, including diabetes-friendly, Lean & Clean (Sun Basket’s calorie-constrained weight management recipes), and vegetarian meals.

“My father has been a cancer researcher at NIH for the past 40 years, and always impressed upon me the importance of healthy eating and preventive care,” said Adam Zbar, CEO and co-founder, Sun Basket. “I'm thrilled Sun Basket can incentivize San Francisco city employees to focus on their health while nourishing them with delicious, easy recipes."
