Blue Shield of California Announces Terry Gilliland, M.D., as Senior Vice President and Chief Health Officer

SAN FRANCISCO (January 8, 2017) --- Terry Gilliland, M.D., has joined Blue Shield of California as senior vice president and chief health officer. He will provide strategic leadership and oversee the nonprofit health plan’s Health Care Services, including Pharmacy, Medical Care Solutions, Clinical Quality and Wellvolution teams.

Gilliland has more than 30 years of clinical experience in provider and health plan settings. He was most recently senior vice president and chief medical officer at Sentara Healthcare in Virginia, where he was responsible for enterprise provider and health plan clinical performance, physician alignment, and enterprise analytics.

He also spent 18 years in clinical leadership roles at Kaiser Permanente in Maryland and Colorado.

“Terry is a great addition to our leadership team and I look forward to working with him to help transform our health care delivery system, enabling everyone access to high-quality, affordable health care,” said Jeff Bailet, M.D., executive vice president of Health Care Quality and Affordability at Blue Shield of California. Gilliland will report to Bailet.

Gilliland earned a medical degree from University of California at Los Angeles, as well as master’s and bachelor’s degree from Stanford University.
