"You Belong Here": Wellness Together Marks a Decade of Supporting Youth Mental Health

In September, standing before a packed ballroom at the San Diego Convention Center, Mental Health Innovator Award recipient Mychal Threets held up a children's book and delivered a powerful message:

"It's okay not to be okay."

Just weeks after publicly sharing his decision to seek treatment during a difficult chapter of his mental health journey, the librarian, Reading Rainbow host, and mental health advocate spoke openly about vulnerability, healing, and connection.

“I'm still here. I'm still trying to be the best version of myself," Threets told attendees.

His words became a defining theme of Wellness Together's 10th Annual Youth Mental Health Conference, held September 9-11. As World Mental Health Day approaches on October 10, his message is especially timely.

"If you're struggling, remember that you are not alone. You matter, and you belong,” he said.

That message echoed throughout the three-day conference, which brought together educators, healthcare leaders, policymakers, and community advocates committed to improving mental health outcomes for young people.

Recognizing leaders making a difference

Threets was one of two recipients of this year's Mental Health Innovator Award, presented by Blue Shield of California and Wellness Together. Hope Scott, executive vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary at Blue Shield of California, presented the awards. The annual awards honor outstanding champions who are advancing youth mental health access, awareness, and advocacy — the three core tenets of Blue Shield’s BlueSky youth mental health initiative.

The second honoree, California State Senator and physician Dr. Akilah Weber Pierson, was recognized for championing policies that support children, families, and youth mental health across California.

Drawing on her experiences as a physician, policymaker, and mother, Dr. Weber Pierson reminded attendees that youth mental health is more than a policy issue: "As an OBGYN, an educator, a state senator, but most importantly, a mom, when we talk about children's health, we're not talking just about statistics or policy. We're talking about someone's child," she said.

Together, the honorees have complementary approaches toward the same goal: help people feel that they belong, while building systems that make support accessible.

Turning conversations into action

Throughout the conference, speakers explored practical solutions to the youth mental health crisis.

One featured panel, moderated by CBS 8 San Diego anchor Jenny Day, brought together psychologist and bestselling author Dr. Lisa Damour, author Anna Malaika Tubbs, and Blue Shield of California director of Behavioral Health Dr. Nicole Stelter.

The discussion focused on helping young people feel connected and supported, while emphasizing the need to reduce stigma and expand access to care. The group also reinforced that meaningful progress happens when organizations work together.

Another powerful moment came during the conference's VIP dinner, where Blue Shield Promise Health Plan’s chief health equity officer, Valerie Martinez, introduced keynote speaker Dr. Fabi Bagula, superintendent of San Diego Unified School District.

Bagula spoke about the responsibility adults share in creating environments where students feel safe, heard, and supported. Reflecting on a recent immigration enforcement action that affected families in her district, she highlighted the impact such events can have on children’s well-being.

Her remarks were a reminder that supporting students requires more than academic success. It also requires stability, compassion, and community.

A decade of impact

For Wellness Together communications director Jeremiah Aja, the conference’s growth reflects a simple idea that began a decade ago:

"What if we got all the stakeholders and leaders across California together to talk about mental health awareness, advocacy, and access to care?"

What began with 500 attendees has grown into an international gathering focused on supporting students and the adults who care for them. And over the past decade, Wellness Together and Blue Shield have worked together to expand access to youth mental health resources across California. As Aja noted, "Healthy classrooms begin with healthy school staff."

For many attendees, however, the conference’s most memorable takeaway came from its opening message.

Standing on stage, Mychal Threets reminded the audience that asking for help is actually a sign of strength, and most of all — belonging can be transformative.

Blue Shield of California Awards $125,000 to Oakland Nonprofits Advancing Youth Mental Health

2026 Stand for What’s Right Awardees with Blue Shield and Oakland Thrives

At the end of September, Blue Shield of California recognized five Oakland nonprofit organizations through its annual Stand for What’s Right Awards, honoring efforts to improve youth mental health and wellness. In collaboration with Oakland Thrives, Blue Shield is also providing $125,000 in grants to help Oakland Thrives and the organizations expand their impact on local youth. The recognition comes as Blue Shield’s latest BlueSky Youth Mental Health Survey found that 94% of California youth experience mental health challenges in an average month.

Community leaders and the nonprofit honorees joined Blue Shield at the East Bay Community Foundation to celebrate this year’s award recipients.

“Our recent BlueSky Youth Mental Health Survey shows that young people across California continue to face significant mental health challenges,” said Perry Chen, director of partnerships and programs, behavioral health services at Blue Shield of California. “With one in five Blue Shield members under age 18, we’re proud to invest in trusted community organizations, especially here in our hometown of Oakland, that are helping young people thrive.”

The Stand for What’s Right Awards build on Blue Shield’s long-standing commitment to youth mental health through BlueSky, its youth mental health initiative. Findings from the BlueSky Youth Mental Health Survey, compiled by BlueSky and Children Now, underscore the need for continued support. Among 750 California youth surveyed, ages 14 to 25, 94% reported experiencing mental health challenges in an average month, while stigma remained a barrier to care.

The survey also highlighted disparities across communities. Among youth reporting poor mental health, 98% identified as youth of color, reinforcing the need for culturally responsive, community-based care.

“Young people are telling us they need more support, and these challenges aren’t experienced equally across communities,” said Chen. “That’s why we’re focused on meeting youth where they are by expanding access to behavioral health services and investing in community-led solutions that help close gaps in care.”

Blue Shield of California Launches Food as Health Initiative With Support for Alameda County Community Food Bank

OAKLAND, Calif. (Sept. 28, 2026) – Blue Shield of California today announced a new statewide “Food as Health” initiative that will provide $600,000 to seven California food-security nonprofits.

The investments will support medically tailored meals, culturally congruent resources, family nutrition programs, and other community-based solutions that connect healthcare and nutrition to improve health outcomes and advance equitable access to care. This initiative reflects the nonprofit health plan’s commitment to addressing the social drivers of health, combating chronic disease, improving access to nutritious food, and advancing long-term healthcare affordability.

As the first investment under Blue Shield’s new statewide Food as Health initiative, Blue Shield and Alameda County Community Food Bank (ACCFB) today announced a $300,000 multi-year investment to expand the food bank’s Food as Medicine program, which provides home-delivered, medically supportive food and nutrition education to eligible Medi-Cal members managing chronic conditions.

Blue Shield is the program’s first and largest corporate sponsor investment, helping Alameda County Community Food Bank’s pioneering Food as Medicine program to serve more people and strengthen the infrastructure, data collection, and evaluation needed to sustain and expand the program.

“Nutritious food is one of the foundations of good health,” said Mike Stuart, president and CEO of Blue Shield of California. “As a nonprofit health plan, we have an important role to play in helping people live healthier lives. Access to healthy food can improve health outcomes, help prevent and manage chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and hypertension, and support more affordable healthcare over the long term. We’re proud to partner with Alameda County Community Food Bank to help build healthier communities and healthier futures.”

The announcement was made during a volunteer event at the food bank’s Oakland facility, where Blue Shield employees assembled Food as Medicine boxes and welcome kits for program participants. Leaders from both organizations, community stakeholders, and participants gathered to celebrate the program’s impact and the role of nutrition in improving health outcomes.

Food as Medicine participants receive 12 weeks of home-delivered, medically supportive food, including fresh produce, proteins, healthy pantry staples, and nutrition education. Developed from a successful diabetes prevention pilot, the program expanded to support people with chronic conditions and became the first food bank in California to leverage funding from California Advancing and Innovating Medi-Cal (CalAIM) to provide medically supportive food to eligible Medi-Cal members. Since 2024, the program has grown from an initial cohort of 20 participants to serving more than 400 people annually, reflecting growing demand for nutrition-based approaches that complement traditional medical care.

"Serving as a food justice organization means pushing the boundaries of what it means to be a food bank,” said Regi Young, executive director of Alameda County Community Food Bank. “Food insecurity is one part of a complex picture impacting our community — and our Food as Medicine program addresses the intersection between our core work and healthcare. As our first and largest corporate sponsor for the program, Blue Shield’s investment will expand our existing model and be a catalyst to share this model with other partners, potentially reshaping how chronic disease is addressed in the future.”

The Alameda County Community Food Bank investment is the first of seven investments that will be awarded through Blue Shield's Food as Health initiative. Additional investments supporting food-security organizations across California will be announced in the coming months.

Blue Shield and Wellness Together Support Youth Mental Health Across California

A recent Blue Shield of California survey of 750 Gen Z youth found that 94% experience regular mental health challenges.

For Alexa, a Southern California teenager who benefitted from in-person school mental health counselors through Wellness Together and Blue Shield of California’s BlueSky youth mental health initiative, those challenges show up every day in the pressure young people face to succeed.

“There’s a lot of stress and expectations to live up to, and a widespread sense of anxiety and depression that youth are facing,” she said. “[When an adult] is willing to listen and is accepting of their struggles, it helps young people feel validated and know someone is there to help them.”

That simple but powerful idea — that one caring adult can make a difference — is at the heart of the collaboration between Blue Shield’s BlueSky youth mental health initiative and Wellness Together.

In 2019, Wellness Together was a small nonprofit with a big goal: bring mental health services directly to students on campus.

“California now has one counselor for every 372 students, an improvement from one counselor for every 500 students in 2023, but still far from the national recommendation of 250-to-1,” said Paula Ambrose, principal of Behavioral Health at Blue Shield of California and program manager for BlueSky. “Our young people need and deserve support. School communities want to provide that support, but they often aren’t equipped to meet the growing need.”

With seed funding from Blue Shield, Wellness Together launched a pilot program in a handful of California school districts, providing students with direct access to mental health professionals at school. The pilot demonstrated that school-based mental health care could work — and be scalable.

“It is not a secret around here that Blue Shield has been the main reason we were able to scale,” said Jeremiah Aja, LPCC, licensed therapist, and director of communications at Wellness Together.

The initial BlueSky investment gave school districts an opportunity to see the model in action before committing their own resources. After seeing the results firsthand, the original district continued funding the services, and others soon followed.

A key strength of the model is accessibility. Students can receive support on campus, regardless of whether they have private insurance or Medi-Cal coverage.

“The toughest part, and really the most expensive part, is access to services,” Aja said. “With us being there on campus, [there are] no requirements of insurance or any type of eligibility.”

Since 2019, BlueSky funding has helped drive Wellness Together’s growth by more than 300%. The collaboration has directly supported more than 33,800 individual, family, group, and crisis intervention counseling sessions. Additionally, 88% of youth served are from underrepresented communities, who often face additional barriers to culturally responsive care.

The impact extends beyond counseling services, creating spaces for students, educators, mental health professionals, and policymakers to connect and advocate for youth mental health.

Blue Shield sponsors Mind Out Loud, Wellness Together’s year-round, youth leadership program and annual virtual mental health event, which reaches more than 10,000 students. The initiative connects young people with mental health resources and equips student leaders to advocate for wellness in their schools and communities. Blue Shield is also the recurring presenting sponsor of the annual Wellness Together Conference, which has grown into a leading international mental health advocacy event, bringing together thousands of educators, district leaders, mental health providers, and policymakers each year.

This year, Blue Shield is also supporting Wellness Together in a new pilot program that will help integrate Children and Youth Behavioral Health Initiative (CYBHI) Certified Wellness Coaches into two Southern California school districts. Working alongside existing mental health counselors, these coaches provide prevention and early-intervention support, helping address mental health workforce shortages and expand access to care. Their support allows licensed counselors to focus on students with more complex mental health needs.

According to Aja, the impact goes far beyond the numbers. “Parents have said, ‘If it weren’t for Wellness Together, my kid would not be able to receive services. My kid is alive because they had someone who was there.’”

Ambrose agrees. “Collectively, we’ve been through so much over the last seven years,” she said. “Sometimes just one caring adult can change the entire course of a young person’s life. Through the BlueSky and Wellness Together collaboration, thousands more California students now have that person within reach.”

Blue Shield of California has been honored with the San Francisco Business Times' "Beyond the Check" award for Sustainability, recognizing the nonprofit health plan's commitment to advancing its environmental efforts through employee engagement, community investments, business operations, and innovative healthcare solutions.

Presented at the San Francisco Business Times Corporate Philanthropy Awards and Summit, the annual awards recognize companies that go beyond financial contributions by sharing time, talent, and technology with nonprofit partners. Awards were presented across five categories: Sustainability, Health, Community Impact, Workforce Development, and Education.

Sustainability as a health imperative

Pollution and environmental events contribute an estimated $820 billion in U.S. healthcare costs annually, with disproportionate impacts on communities with lower incomes. As one of California's largest nonprofit health plans and the only major health plan to voluntarily cap its income at 2% of revenue and return the remainder to customers and communities, Blue Shield recognizes that healthier environments support healthier people, stronger communities, and a more affordable healthcare system. Environmental conditions can contribute to chronic disease, mental health challenges, disruptions in care, and rising healthcare costs. In response, Blue Shield has embedded sustainability into its operations, employee engagement programs, philanthropic investments, community collaborations, and care models.

Advancing sustainability goals

In 2025, Blue Shield launched a Green Advisory Board representing leaders across the Ascendiun Family of Companies, including Blue Shield of California, Stellarus, and Blue Shield Promise Health Plan, to help advance sustainability efforts across the organization. Blue Shield is also among a small number of health plans globally to commit to and receive validation from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), the internationally recognized gold standard for science-based emissions reduction targets. By 2030, the Ascendiun Family of Companies, including Blue Shield of California, will reduce direct greenhouse gas emissions by 42% and engage suppliers so that 52% of suppliers, measured by emissions impact, have science-based targets in place.

Blue Goes Green volunteers at Keep Oakland Beautiful

Blue Shield's employee-led Blue Goes Green initiative, founded more than a decade ago, empowers employees to take environmental action at work, at home, and in their communities. In 2025, nearly all (93%) of Blue Shield's employees participated in volunteer and giving programs. For environmental engagement, more than 1,200 employees contributed over 4,600 volunteer hours to environmental causes, including beach cleanups, urban greening projects, and community resilience efforts across California.

Strengthening community resilience

Blue Shield invests in community-led solutions and initiatives that help communities prepare for and respond to environmental challenges. One example is Anchors in Resilient Communities (ARC), an Oakland-based initiative that strengthens community and healthcare responses to environmental events through cross-sector collaboration. Blue Shield also supports the Climate Mental Health Network, helping provide resources for students, families, and educators to address climate anxiety, including support for schools affected by recent Southern California wildfires.

Supporting members and expanding greener care

Blue Shield helps members stay connected to care during environmental disruptions by supporting access to healthcare services, replacing critical medical equipment when needed, and providing digital ID cards when physical cards are lost or destroyed. The nonprofit health plan also raises awareness of the health impacts of extreme heat and poor air quality, provides educational resources on environmental health risks, and supports organizations doing critical work. Through Virtual Blue, its flagship virtual care model, Blue Shield is expanding access to affordable, high-quality care while reducing environmental impact. Blue Shield research found that virtual and hybrid care models can reduce water use by an average of 35% and carbon emissions by 25%.

"We're working to build a healthier future for all Californians," said Stuart. "We believe deeply that healthier environments lead to healthier people, stronger communities, and ultimately a more affordable healthcare system. And when healthcare is affordable, it becomes more accessible to all."

Blue Shield of California’s BlueSky Youth Mental Health Initiative Earns National North Star Award

Blue Shield of California’s BlueSky youth mental health initiative has received the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association’s prestigious 2026 North Star Award in the Healthier Lives for Members and Local Communities category, recognizing its efforts to expand youth mental health support across California.

The North Star Awards honor outstanding programs and initiatives across the Blue Cross and Blue Shield system that create meaningful impact for members and local communities.

“Strong mental health begins in childhood and lays the foundation for lifelong well-being,” said Mike Stuart, president and CEO of Blue Shield of California. “Nearly 1 in 4 U.S. adults have experienced a mental illness in the past year. Mental health challenges can increase the risk of chronic disease and poorer health outcomes later in life, which is why investing in youth mental health is one of the most important ways we can improve the long-term health of our communities. Blue Shield launched BlueSky in 2019 after California received a D grade in youth mental health from Children Now, a nonprofit dedicated to children’s public policy issues. Since then, the BlueSky initiative has grown into a statewide effort focused on improving emotional well-being for young people through school-based and virtual mental health services, educator training, and youth-led advocacy programs, particularly in underserved communities.

The need remains urgent. Blue Shield’s 2025 BlueSky Youth Mental Health Survey found that 94% of California Gen Z youth report regularly struggling with mental health challenges.

“We Believe in You”: Blue Shield of California and UC Berkeley Celebrate School of Public Health 2026 Graduates

In 2022, Blue Shield of California launched a five-year collaboration with the University of California, Berkeley School of Public Health to expand access to public health careers for students from underrepresented backgrounds. Through the Blue Shield of California Fellowship Program, cohorts of up to 27 master’s students receive rigorous academic training, professional development, and hands-on experience — preparing them to address health inequities and build impactful careers.

In May, Blue Shield hosted an event at its Oakland headquarters to honor students in the program. The event recognized the third cohort for graduating and the fourth cohort for completing the first year of their two-year program. Together, these cohorts reflect the program’s mission to broaden opportunity in public health:

93% identify as African American, Chicano/Latino, Native American/Alaska Native, or Pacific Islander
70% are first-generation college students, and 84% are first-generation graduate students
51% come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds

The celebration also marked a program milestone, bringing the total number of fellows recognized to 89, with the fellowship on track to reach nearly 100 graduates in its fourth year.

"I believe what I learned over the last two years wouldn't have been possible without the Blue Shield of California Fellowship,” said Tolson. “It helped me make connections within my cohort, the Berkeley School of Public Health, alumni, and Blue Shield. This experience gave me the chance to learn and grow and understand public health from a more in-depth perspective and supported my aspirations in biostatistics. I want to thank everyone for their support and guidance throughout this graduate journey."

Simmons shared that her decision to pursue public health was shaped by growing up in underinvested communities in Oakland and witnessing firsthand how structural inequities affect health outcomes.

“I didn’t just want to understand these challenges; I wanted to be part of changing them," she said. "As I move forward, I plan to work at the intersection of public health and systems change, using both policy and practice to design and support programs rooted in equity, dignity, and community voice. This program taught me that real change requires action, collaboration, and a commitment to reimagining systems that have historically left communities behind."

Beyond internships and fellowships, the collaboration extends into the classroom. Professor Kimberly MacPherson, who previously worked at a health plan, has spent more than two decades teaching at UC Berkeley designing coursework that bridges public health and business. Over the past five years, her students have partnered with Blue Shield on real-world challenges, developing and presenting solutions directly to employees.

MacPherson notes that Berkeley’s public health students bring a distinct strength to this work: a mindset grounded in storytelling, empathy, and listening — skills essential to meeting communities where they are and driving meaningful change.

That message was echoed by Dean of the School of Public Health, Dr. Michael C. Lu, who addressed the 2026 graduates with both encouragement and perspective. He shared that while public health is not always easy, it is always the right thing to do. He also reminded students that their lived experiences, education, and enthusiasm will take them far in their careers.

He closed with a simple message: “We believe in you. Go Bears.”

Alongside Blue Shield of California, Hundreds of Young People Brave the Rain to Speak Up for Mental Health

On a stormy Tuesday morning, more than 200 high school and college students from across California arrived at the State Capitol — many after hours-long bus rides — to share their stories, meet with policymakers, and advocate for stronger support for youth mental health.

The annual Advocacy Day, held April 21 and organized by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) California with support from Blue Shield of California, brought students together for a rally followed by meetings with state leaders at the Capitol.

“Seeing so many young people show up and speak openly about their mental health is powerful,” said Sarah Summer, vice president of behavioral health at Blue Shield of California. “It takes courage, thanks to the stigma today — but it shouldn’t have to. These youth are helping create a future where mental health conversations are open, accepted, and supported.”

Recent data from Blue Shield’s BlueSky Youth Mental Health survey highlights the urgency: 94% of Gen Z youth report experiencing mental health challenges in an average month, and 35% who sought but didn’t receive care cited embarrassment as a reason.

Still, young people remain resilient — 63% say they feel hopeful for the future, and 69% have talked to a friend about their mental health.

That resilience was on full display at Advocacy Day.

“It’s important for me to be here,” said Anajoaquina Alvarez Nava, a high school sophomore who traveled two hours by bus from the Central Valley. “People came from even farther because it's important to advocate for these issues. We need to stand up and have our voices heard.”

For many students, sharing their experiences is both empowering and impactful.

“When I share my story, I create space for others to feel comfortable and open up,” said Ella Cruz, a junior at Christian Brothers High School in Sacramento. “It also helps me move forward my goal of reducing stigma around mental health.”

Beyond Advocacy Day, Blue Shield’s support helps expand NAMI California programs like NAMI On Campus, which empowers student-led mental health clubs in high schools across the state. Through funding from Blue Shield’s BlueSky youth mental health initiative, the program has grown significantly — from 1,051 participants and 70 clubs across California in 2020, to more than 4,194 students across 178 clubs in 2026.

These clubs provide peer-led support for students who are experiencing mental health challenges, supporting friends or family members, or interested in advocacy — creating safe spaces for conversation and normalizing mental health discussions among youth.

While Advocacy Day is a powerful moment, the work continues long after students return home. With support from BlueSky and NAMI California, youth across California are driving more open conversations, reducing stigma, and advocating for change around mental health in their schools and communities.

300 Blue Shield of California Volunteers Rolled up Their Sleeves to Honor Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta

On March 31, more than 300 Blue Shield of California volunteers joined forces with California nonprofits for Blue Shield's second annual “Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta Day of Service.” The statewide event, hosted on Cesar Chavez Day and the last day of Women’s History Month, honors the two civil rights champions’ legacy of service by making a difference for those in need.

"As a nonprofit health plan, giving back is part of who we are and organizing around this Day of Service is truly a labor of love,” said Edgar Alonzo, co-chair for Blue Shield’s ¡Unidos! employee resource group, which organized the day’s activities alongside Blue Shield’s Elevating Women employee resource group.

Nearly a dozen Blue Shield volunteer events took place across California — in Sacramento, the East Bay, Los Angeles and San Diego. Employees contributed more than 800 hours to nonprofits dedicated to health advocacy, food access, environmental sustainability and uplifting underresourced communities — all core aspects of Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta’s activism.

“Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta’s commitment to standing for what’s right and improving the lives of others moved mountains for millions, including my own family,” said Alonzo, who personally organized the East Bay event for 80 Blue Shield volunteers at the Alameda County Community Food Bank. “It’s a great feeling to be able to put their legacy of service into action and help pay it forward.” Alonzo and his East Bay team of volunteers helped pack 61,642 pounds of food which will be distributed as 51,163 meals to low-income Alameda families, children and seniors.

For 30-year Blue Shield employee Mari Corbin, participating in the Day of Service to honor Huerta and Chavez was especially meaningful.

"My parents were proud California farmworkers, and I too was a California farmworker in my youth. I remember us marching together alongside Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta in the 1980s as we advocated for a healthier, more equitable tomorrow for farmworkers, laborers and Californians,” said Corbin, who joined 30 Blue Shield volunteers to build a greenhouse, and do spring planting and garden maintenance at the Alchemist Oak Park Sol Community Garden in Sacramento. Fresh fruits and vegetables grown in the greenhouse will be distributed through the nonprofit’s Community Food Connections program, which delivers farm-fresh produce and grocery staples to low-income, food insecure South Sacramento families.

“Roling up my sleeves on this special day — planting, weeding and building with my colleagues to support this community garden and increase access to healthy food for our neighbors in need — it's all very full circle. It was a really meaningful way to honor these legendary leaders who truly changed the trajectory of my life, my parents' lives and the lives of so many other Californians.”

In addition to volunteer hours, Blue Shield of California contributed to the Dolores Huerta Foundation, which is dedicated to empowering and mobilizing communities in volunteer activations for civic engagement, health equity and education initiatives.

"I want to thank all of the ¡Unidos! workers at Blue Shield for all the community work that you have been doing, the volunteering work — it is so important to set that kind of an example because it takes all of us to build a better world.” shared Huerta in a personal message to Blue Shield’s volunteers. “Sí se puede.”

“Trees Play a Crucial Role in Public Health”: Blue Shield Celebrates California Arbor Week

This week, Blue Shield of California joined forces with California ReLeaf, California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire), local leaders and community members for a celebration and tree planting in Woodland as part of California Arbor Week.

During the kickoff event, which took place at Rick Gonzales, Sr. Park, Arbor Week sponsors and community partners stressed the importance of increasing tree canopies to help address extreme heat, clean air and public health improvement.

“Trees play a crucial role in public health,” said Dr. Jennifer Nuovo, chief medical officer at Blue Shield of California Promise Health Plan, who represented Blue Shield of California at the event. “A robust tree canopy improves mental and physical health, combats pollution and helps build community.”

Dr. Nuovo also announced the four winners of the youth Arbor Week Art Contest, which engages students ages 5-12 on the importance of neighborhood trees in community health and connection. It's Blue Shield of California’s third consecutive year sponsoring the art contest, coordinated by California ReLeaf in partnership with Cal Fire. This year’s theme, “Trees Root Our Community,” encouraged participants to consider the many ways trees foster community and help improve public health. California ReLeaf received hundreds of submissions from across the state, ultimately unveiling the artwork of the four winners during the event.

“Supporting our youth and empowering them to take action is so important,” said Dr. Nuovo. “When it comes to Blue Shield’s climate action — reducing our emissions, reducing paper to save trees, greening health care through our Virtual Blue health plan, helping combat growing youth climate anxiety, partnering with organizations like California ReLeaf, and doing the right thing — it's not just a matter of saving the planet, it’s about saving lives and keeping people healthy. We all need to do our part.”

The statewide California Arbor Week event takes place March 7-14 annually, and encourages Californians to plant, nurture and appreciate trees, while recognizing their vital role in our environment, communities and quality of life. Funding from this year’s California Arbor Week and Growing Green Communities tree-planting grants will support 23 grassroots urban forestry projects across the state. The tree planted at Rick Gonzales, Sr. Park, through partnership with the Woodland Tree Foundation, City of Woodland and Woodland Joint Unified School District, will join Woodland’s over 16,000 trees that are part of the city’s nurtured and robust urban forest.

A Culture of Philanthropy: 99% of Blue Shield of California’s Employees Gave Back in 2024

Blue Shield of California is one of California’s largest health plans, with nearly 6 million members and over 7,500 employees.

In 2024, a record-breaking 99% of Blue Shield employees participated in volunteer and giving programs, tracking more than 68,700 volunteer hours and contributing over $1.6 million in donations to more than 2,600 nonprofit organizations after the company match. This is an increase from the previous record of 96% of employees participating in giving and volunteerism in 2023, up from 79% in 2022. For comparison, Blue Shield’s employee giving and volunteerism participation is triple that of companies of comparable size according to Benevity, a leading organization for corporate citizenship tracking and reporting.

“Giving back has long been part of Blue Shield’s ethos and DNA,” said Antoinette Mayer, vice president, who leads Blue Shield’s nationally awarded Corporate Citizenship program. “But the recent record-breaking participation is a true testament to the beating heart and commitment our employees have for our mission and to join Blue Shield in standing for what’s right for our members, communities and planet.”

Research consistently shows that giving back, whether through volunteering or donating, improves happiness and well-being. Corporate giving and volunteer programs also provide an opportunity to drive important community impact while building morale and improving retention. Mayer sees it all as a win-win-win.

She attributes the powerful culture of philanthropy at Blue Shield to two factors — Blue Shield “walking the walk” when it comes to the company’s mission, coupled with robust benefits to support and boost employee giving efforts. This has earned Blue Shield numerous awards, including recognition as one of the most community-minded companies in the nation by The Civic 50 for two years in a row.

As a taxpaying, nonprofit health plan, Blue Shield of California is also the only major health plan to voluntarily cap income at 2% of revenue, returning the difference back to customers and California communities. Since 2004, the health plan has contributed $736 million to Blue Shield of California Foundation, whose mission is to build lasting and equitable solutions to make California the healthiest state and end domestic violence.

BlueSky, Blue Shield’s youth mental health initiative, celebrated its 5-year anniversary last year. The initiative invests in best-in-class nonprofits and programs that promote emotional well-being for young people across California, particularly youth in marginalized communities. To date, BlueSky has supported over 20,000 youth and educators with its programs for therapy, training and youth advocacy.

On the climate action front, Blue Shield is one of only a handful of health plans globally working to reduce its emissions through the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) — the most rigorous and clearly defined pathway for companies to reduce their carbon footprint. As part of Blue Shield’s continued commitment to climate care as health care, Blue Shield has also invested in better understanding and supporting youth facing climate mental health impacts and greening health care via Virtual Blue.

Blue Shield believes that transforming health care starts with ensuring every employee is empowered to contribute to a healthier tomorrow. As such, it facilitated 375 employee volunteer and giving opportunities in 2024, ranging from home repairs and tree plantings, to fundraising for therapy animal programs and diabetes prevention, to mock interviews for people with disabilities, as well as a second annual fall food drive that collected nearly 4,600 lbs. of food.

“We have a large, diverse employee base with diverse interests, backgrounds and talents, so we have a real opportunity to make a big difference in the communities where we live and work,” said Jane Nichol, manager of social impact. “We want to make it as easy as possible for our employees to give back in a way that is meaningful for them, as well as for the nonprofits and communities we’re serving.”

Employee-giving benefits

To encourage and support employees in giving back, Blue Shield also provides the following benefits:

Paid Community Service Time Off: Employees receive 24 hours of paid community service time off each year to volunteer with an eligible California nonprofit organization.
Day-One Donation: New employees are provided with $50 to donate to the cause of their choosing within their first 90 days.
Matching Gifts: Blue Shield matches $1 for every $1 an employee donates to eligible nonprofits, up to $1,000 per employee per year. Employees who serve on a California nonprofit board are eligible for an increased match.
Weeks of Giving: During our quarterly Weeks of Giving, Blue Shield increases the company match to 2:1, matching $2 for every $1 an employee donates to eligible nonprofits.
Dollars for Doers: Employees who volunteer outside of work hours can earn Dollars for Doers. Blue Shield will give $10 for donation to a nonprofit organization for every hour of volunteerism up to $250 per employee per year.

Blue Shield Volunteers Team Up With Kingdom Day Parade Organizers to Support Wildfire Recovery Over Martin Luther King, Jr. Weekend

Blue Shield of California employee Cheryl Mack, a program manager, also assists in running a year-round, free, community thrift store with friends in Santa Clarita. Like so many, after seeing the toll of the recent Southern California wildfires, she wanted to do what she could to help.

“Seeing the devastation in person, it’s overwhelming and heart-wrenching — it made me weep,” said Mack. “My friend’s 94-year-old aunt lost her home; she lived there for 62 years. There are so many stories like this one, people who've lost these generational homes.”

On January 12, Mack and her friends jumped into action, packing up all the items from their store into U-Haul trucks and vans and heading south.

“We set up a pop-up store for distribution and donation collection on the sidewalk, and the response was overwhelming,” said Mack. “We gave away almost everything, while also receiving a generous number of newly donated items.”

This past weekend, given the need and success of the first pop-up, Mack and her friends did it again — this time with helping hands from Blue Shield colleagues and families. They were also able to work in conjunction with the Congress of Racial Equality - California (CORE-CA), the annual Kingdom Day Parade organizers, who provided U-Haul trucks, supplies and support in getting the word out to the community.

“Blue Shield is the presenting sponsor for the Kingdom Day Parade and has been for the last eight years,” said Mack, who also volunteers on the parade committee. “When the parade couldn’t happen this weekend because of the fires, we thought, what better way to continue to partner and honor Dr. King’s commitment to service than to provide help where it’s needed?”

Together, the volunteers helped sort, separate and prepare over 500 bags of donated items. On Sunday, they opened the pop-up in Pasadena, distributing more than 1,600 items to community members, including clothes, school supplies, masks, hygiene items, diapers, blankets, portable phone chargers and more.

“Dr. King was about community and helping others," said Mack. “Doing this over Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend was significant because it honors his strong legacy and his commitment to community, serving the needs of others and showing unwavering compassion for all people with love.”

Blue Shield Partners With Local Program, Anchors in Resilient Communities, to Improve Health Outcomes and Empower Those Most Vulnerable to Climate Change Disruptions

In California, we’ve all experienced the effects of climate change and pollution, ranging from crisis climate disasters like wildfires and flooding, to chronic, ongoing issues like bad air days, extreme heat and more. California is truly on the front lines of our changing, struggling planet.

Climate change and pollutants directly impact people’s health and the health of our communities — and they are also costing our healthcare industry billions of dollars. Across the nation, healthcare costs stemming from pollution and climate change exceed $820 billion annually according to the National Resources Defense Council. Additionally, growing climate disasters are causing disruptions in quality of care, like California fires destroying entire hospital networks or North Carolina communities getting medicine delivered by mules after Hurricane Helene in September.

At Blue Shield of California, we are taking bold action on climate change. However, it is when we come together in coalition with other organizations that we can make an even greater impact. The Oakland-headquartered program, Anchors in Resilient Communities, is doing just that — convening organizations to address health and climate disruption with the goal of building more resilient communities, together.

Anchors in Resilient Communities is a multi-stakeholder collaboration, co-coordinated by Health Care Without Harm and Emerald Cities Collaborative in Northern California. The collaboration brings together community stakeholders and “anchor institutions,” like Blue Shield of California, at select regional levels to identify opportunities to enhance community resiliency during climate events. Anchor institutions, according to Lucia Sayre, Health Care Without Harm’s regional director of Innovation and Resilience, are defined as “place-based entities, such as universities, hospitals, community foundations, county governments or municipalities, that are rooted in and committed to serving the local community through their missions. They are often among the largest employers and property holders in the communities they serve, providing community-focused programs.” The collaboration's goal is to improve health outcomes, as well as strengthen communities of color and low- and moderate-income residents to be resilient in the face of climate change.

In 2024, Anchors in Resilient Communities is one of four recipients across California selected to receive an environmental justice investment from Blue Shield, this year directed to organizations that support clean air or general climate resilience. The organizations selected are each located in different high-risk air quality areas where vulnerable communities are bearing heavy health burdens. As part of this investment, Anchors recently convened community leaders to strategize for increased engagement around community climate resilience, health equity and environmental sustainability.

Leading up to the Anchors convening in Oakland in October, staff conducted a series of comprehensive interviews with stakeholders to shape the agenda, surface any concerns and understand organizational priorities. Twenty anchor institutions, including Blue Shield of California as well as community-based and municipal organizations, were in attendance.

“It is clear that there are some terrific resiliency efforts happening in pockets all across the Bay Area,” said Tessa Verhoef, principal on Blue Shield's Sustainability team, who represented Blue Shield at the meeting. “It’s also clear from this convening that there is huge opportunity to better coordinate and share resources to strengthen our efforts and impact. The more coordinated our efforts, the more we can understand resiliency gaps and be better prepared to support our communities in the event of a climate-induced emergency.”

According to Sayre, meetings like this generate connectivity and help build trusting relationships between the public health community, private health care and community-based organizations, and pave the way to develop program-based strategies for climate mitigation, health and equity.

“Air quality issues like intense heat which can exacerbate ozone levels, wildfire smoke, industrial greenhouse gas emissions and freeway pollution directly affect people’s health, and where you live impacts your health outcomes,” said Sayre. “We’re going to listen to what the community needs, identify what is already happening on the ground, and discuss opportunities for anchor institutions to increase their support of community climate-resiliency efforts. One idea is to help support the design and creation of ‘climate-resilient hubs’ where the community can find refuge from poor air quality and extreme heat, as well as resources to help mitigate the ongoing impacts of climate disruption.”

Baylis Beard, Blue Shield of California’s director of Sustainability, sees opportunities like this as a way to not only learn about and leverage resources from one another but also provide reinforcement and “interweaving,” particularly with community-based organizations who may lack the resources to make the connections themselves. “If you think of resiliency as a fabric, like threads of a fabric we are stronger threaded together,” shared Beard. "So we are collaborating wherever we can — including organizing with other healthcare providers to promote sustainability efforts and reduce carbon emissions.”

As part of Blue Shield of California’s action on climate change, the nonprofit health plan is one of only a handful of health payer plans globally working to reduce our emissions by committing to the global Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). SBTi is the most rigorous and clearly defined pathway to reduce our carbon footprint in line with the Paris Accords. By 2025, Blue Shield has committed to set near-term, companywide emissions reductions and submit to SBTi for validation. Blue Shield is also actively engaging other U.S.-based health allies in environmentally sustainable health care and greater health equity for climate-vulnerable populations.

"A healthier environment leads to healthier people and when it comes to climate change, we can’t operate in silos. We can’t look at each other just as competitors — we have to think more broadly about how to catalyze our industry together around climate,” said Beard. “We’re proud to be a part of this collaborative action on climate change, and to support programs like Anchors in Resilient Communities that are bringing people together in such a big way and empowering our vulnerable neighbors to have a real voice in advancing environmental justice and health equity in our communities.”

Over 400 Blue Shield Employees and Their Furry Friends Made a Difference With Nonprofit, Pet Partners

This fall, 433 Blue Shield of California employees spent time with their furry friends to support the annual Pet Partners “World’s Largest Pet Walk.” The event takes place virtually each year, and is a nationwide walk for pet owners and their pets to raise awareness and funds for therapy animal programs.

“Our pets keep us grounded, and help us feel happy and healthy,” said Kelly Stern, senior vice president of Communications and Corporate Citizenship at Blue Shield. “Pets offer companionship and help manage loneliness, reduce stress, improve heart health, help children with their emotional and social skills, and bring people together. We’re proud to support Pet Partners’ mission and have such a strong showing of Blue Shield engagement for the World’s Largest Pet Walk every year.”

The event encourages individuals across the globe to step out with their pets — whether dogs, cats or other animals — in support of the therapeutic power of the human-animal bond. Participants can walk at their own pace and in their preferred location. It promotes physical wellness for people and animals, and helps fund the certification of therapy animal teams to provide emotional and healing support in hospitals, schools and other community settings.

Kristen Cerf, president and chief executive officer for Blue Shield Promise Health Plan, and her bernadoodle, Dean, are also regular participants in the Pet Walk. “There is a vital connection to health provided by the human-animal bond we share with our pets,” said Cerf. “The Pet Walk is a great way to support an important cause and promote holistic well-being through meaningful community engagement. Dean and I look forward to participating in and supporting the Pet Walk every year."

Antoinette Mayer, vice president of Corporate Citizenship for Blue Shield, says the nonprofit health plan’s ongoing relationship with Pet Partners just makes sense. “We have a mission to ensure all Californians have access to high-quality health care at an affordable price. Health care goes beyond medicine, doctors and tests. Pet therapy can enhance recovery, reduce stress and foster more positive patient outcomes,” said Mayer. “Our employees love giving back, they love making a difference, and they LOVE their pets. Working with and supporting Pet Partners is a great way to engage our employees around a nonprofit that’s in line with our mission, and where our employees can also get outside and improve their own health while participating, too.”

Kelly Seymour, senior manager of IT Digital Employee Experience at Blue Shield’s El Dorado Hills office, has seen firsthand the impact that Pet Partners therapy program makes for seniors, patients, veterans and children. Her poodle mix, Dolly Parton, is a registered therapy animal through Pet Partners, and makes regular rounds at a local hospital, visiting patients in the maternity ward, intensive care unit and emergency room. “When Dolly and I walk through the hospital halls or into hospital rooms, the staff and patients light up with joy when they see Dolly ready for a head-pat or a small treat,” said Seymour. Dolly Parton has also made therapy appearances at a local school and memory care facility.

This year marked Pet Partners’ 7th year hosting the virtual walk, and Blue Shield’s 6th year participating. Blue Shield employees tracked over 900 hours and donated $4,790, in addition to Blue Shield’s titanium sponsorship of the event.

How to Stay Healthy When Air Quality Is Bad

As California Clean Air Day approaches on October 2, we in California are in the midst of wildfire season. Due to climate change, our wildfires in California are more intense, burn longer and impact more parts of the state. Frequent wildfires across our state release tiny particles into the air that not only darken skies, but are also inhaled into our lungs, posing serious health risks.

“Those of us in the healthcare field see firsthand the impact of pollution, wildfires, extreme heat and floods on people’s health,” said Dr. Jennifer Nuovo, chief medical officer for Blue Shield of California Promise Health Plan. “Everyone is impacted by bad air, but these impacts are magnified for low-income communities, where pollution is often greater and there is less mitigation.”

Californians exposed to extreme pollution or wildfire smoke experience increased respiratory problems, such as asthma and bronchitis. Poor air quality exacerbates existing health conditions, causes negative mental health impacts, and leads to higher health care utilization and costs. Vulnerable populations, including children, seniors, pregnant women, individuals with pre-existing conditions and outdoor workers, are particularly at risk.

Across the country, healthcare costs stemming from pollution and climate change exceed $820 billion annually according to the National Resources Defense Council, with pollution from fossil fuels contributing to 107,000 premature deaths per year in the United States.

To protect yourself and loved ones, Dr. Nuovo offers several tips:

Monitor air quality: Stay informed about the forecast and check the air quality. The AirNow Mobile app, as well as many weather apps, include air quality measurements and ratings.
Stay indoors: If the air quality is poor, limit outdoor activities and keep doors and windows closed to prevent smoke from entering. Consider visiting a California Clean Air Center if you don’t have an air-conditioning unit or can’t filter the air in your home. If you must go outside when the air quality is poor, wear an N95 mask.
Use air purifiers and humidifiers: Invest in a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) purifier to help filter harmful particles from the air inside your home. If you don’t have one, you can make a temporary air filter using a box fan and a HEPA filter. When purchasing air conditioning, get one with a HEPA filter and set it to recirculate air to prevent outdoor air from being pulled inside. Adding moisture to indoor air with a humidifier can also help reduce irritation in your airways caused by poor air quality.
Seal your home and avoid generating pollutants: Block gaps around doors and windows with weather stripping or towels to reduce the amount of smoke that enters the home. While indoors, avoid activities that increase air pollution, such as using gas stoves, smoking, vacuuming or burning candles.
Hydrate and rest: Drink plenty of water to help your body and brain cope with the stress of smoke exposure, and rest as much as possible. Smoke can cause dehydration, and drinking fluids helps your body recover.
Consult a doctor: If you have pre-existing respiratory conditions, follow your doctor’s advice and use prescribed medications or inhalers as directed (preferably ones that do not contribute to greater air pollution). If you notice a change in your well-being — such as severe shortness of breath, persistent coughing or chest pain — seek medical help immediately.

Blue Shield Volunteers Roll Up Their Sleeves to Make Oakland Greener

Blue Shield employees show up to plant trees at Arrowhead Marsh in Oakland

Last week, a team of more than 70 Blue Shield of California volunteers joined forces with Keep Oakland Beautiful and the Oakland Parks and Recreation Foundation at Martin Luther King Jr. Regional Shoreline in Oakland. The group planted 85 trees as part of the Community Greening Program, which aims to plant 2,000 trees in East Oakland over three years.

“Today’s tree planting is more than just about adding greenery to the landscape. It’s about Blue Shield’s commitment to help improve our Oakland community, where our company is headquartered, while also advancing health equity and promoting environmental sustainability,” said Ricquel Jackson, a Blue Shield employee, board member of Keep Oakland Beautiful and proud Oakland resident. “Trees are health care. They help improve mental and physical health, combat climate change and pollution, and build community.”

The tree planting event took place near Arrowhead Marsh, a location known for its natural beauty and ecological significance. Volunteers spent the morning digging, planting and ensuring that each tree was securely in place.

“One of the reasons that I joined Blue Shield is because of its strong commitment to create a more sustainable and climate-resilient healthcare system,” said Mike Tonsing, senior director of product strategy at Blue Shield and member of the company’s “Blue Goes Green” volunteer initiative. “I’m really proud to be among this group of Blue Shield colleagues, showing up in such full force to make a difference. We’re taking action that reinforces that healthy communities and a healthy environment go hand in hand.”

Echoing those sentiments, Antoinette Mayer, Blue Shield of California vice president of Corporate Citizenship, said, “This event is just one example of how Blue Shield of California is actively contributing to local communities and addressing larger environmental challenges. We have committed to multiple sustainability initiatives aimed at reducing our carbon footprint, promoting environmental health and building resilient communities.
